National Female Youth Member of Parliament-Elect Mercy Kanyesigye has hailed her victory as a testament to youth determination and independence, attributing her historic win to the overwhelming support of young voters.
Speaking on Next Big Talk hosted by Next Radio on Monday, Kanyesigye described her triumph as a clear signal that young people are increasingly making their voices heard beyond money and political patronage.
Contesting as an independent after losing the NRM party flag to Diana Ampaire, she said her win reflected the genuine will of the youth.
“I won genuinely, despite the odds not being in my favor since I wasn’t a flagbearer. It was all people’s support,” Kanyesigye said.
She expressed gratitude to young voters, noting that their decision challenged stereotypes that youth are easily influenced or solely motivated by money.
Kanyesigye emphasized that her success is rooted in five years of engagement in youth leadership, equipping her with insight into the challenges young people face and how to represent them effectively.
In the elections, Kanyesigye secured 216 votes, defeating NRM’s Diana Ampaire, who received 198 votes. Independent candidate Julia Muhumuza received 24 votes, while NUP’s Edith Namande Nakaiza secured 1 vote.
Observers view Kanyesigye’s victory as a milestone for youth politics in Uganda, highlighting a shift toward independent leadership and issue-based representation.
As she prepares to take her seat in the 12th Parliament, she has pledged to champion policies and opportunities that address pressing social and economic challenges facing young people.
